Ep-4: Brook & Bull Winery

In October 2018 I attended the Wine Media Conference (formerly: Wine Bloggers Conference) in Walla Walla, WA and arrived on Thursday, checked into my hotel, and strolled around town until I saw a familiar sign - Otis Kenyon Winery. I stepped in and was reacquainted with Muriel Kenyon and we chatted for a while talking about wineries, wine people and she mentioned Ashley Trout, a local Walla Walla winemaker, and her non-profit winery that supports a community health clinic. My curiosity was piqued and I learned that Ashley Trout was to be on panel discussion about women in the wine industry (at my #WMC18 conference) the next day.

The panel discussion was fascinating and after hearing all the presenters I knew I had to interview them. Coming from a nonprofit volunteer background, in my early days, and geeky about wine and social issues I knew I wanted to chat with Ashley Trout as soon as possible.

Ashley Trout, winemaker/owner

Ashley Trout is the owner and winemaker of Brook & Bull Cellars and Vital Winery.

Ashley began her wine making career at 18, following her passions around the world in search of the best ways to combine a love of wine making with a goal for community betterment. She spent the better part of a decade working harvests in Mendoza Argentina and has been an integral part of the Walla Walla Valley wine scene since 1999.

Brook & Bull wines are hand-crafted from vine to bottle, made with small fruit lots sourced from carefully tended vineyards. From alcohol to acid, phenolics to tannin, balance is always her goal. Click here to see the current Brook & Bull wines.

Ashley is also runs Vital Winery, a non-profit winery, with proceeds supporting Walla Walla Valley vineyard and winery workers access to affordable health care. Vital Wines produces wines that complete a circle. All profits go to the SOS Clinic, a free, non-profit health care clinic in the Walla Walla area dedicated to helping people get the healthcare that they both need and deserve with no questions asked.
